TRADITIONAL MATERIALS
Lime mortar pointing for older Cheshire properties
Many older brick and stone buildings were constructed with lime-based mortars. These joints are often softer and more vapour-permeable than modern dense cement pointing. Using an overly hard mortar on softer historic masonry can contribute to trapped moisture and damage to the brick or stone faces.
We inspect the existing mortar and masonry before choosing a suitable repair mix. Where appropriate, we work with natural hydraulic lime (including NHL 3.5) and carefully selected sands, adjusting the specification to the building, exposure and condition rather than applying the same mix to every wall.
For lime repointing, preparation matters as much as the finished joint: defective mortar is carefully removed, the joints are cleaned and appropriately dampened, and fresh mortar is packed and finished with attention to weather conditions and curing. Lime mortar is not the right choice for every structure, so we'll explain the recommendation when quoting.

Brick repointing: Careful joint preparation and neat finishing for weathered brick elevations, garden walls and period brickwork, with particular attention to avoiding damage to brick arrises.
Stone repointing: Appropriate joint profiles and compatible mortar for coursed and irregular stonework, including older properties where hard cement patching may need removing.
Chimney repointing: Repointing of accessible chimney masonry where mortar joints have deteriorated. Access requirements and any additional repairs are assessed separately during the quotation.

How do I know whether my house needs repointing?
Visible gaps, loose or crumbling mortar and heavily weathered joints are common signs. We can inspect the brickwork and advise whether local repairs or more extensive work would be appropriate.
Can you repoint just part of a wall?
Yes. Some properties only require local repairs while others benefit from a larger area being repointed.

Can you remove hard cement pointing from stone or brick?
Where appropriate, we can carefully remove failed or incompatible cement pointing. The risk of damage and the amount of work involved depend on how hard the existing mortar is and the condition of the masonry.
Do you repoint whole house elevations?
Yes. We quote for complete elevations as well as localised repairs, and can include tower or fixed scaffolding where safe access is required.
